Golf At Its Best on the LMS (London, Midland & Scottish Railway)
Leigh, Dell
Published by London Midland & Scottish Railway, 1925
117 pages, gilt lettering to cover. The book was published by the Railway as a way to spur interest in riders. The book contains the full color fold-out map in the rear, which is becoming increasingly difficult to find in a fine condition such as the one here. Contains a brief summary and picture of each course. In total it reviews thirty courses including Cruden Bay, Gleneagles, Turnberry, Dornoch, Portrush. We really like the writing style, as an example the description of arriving by train to play Dornoch: "The joyous awakening in the sleeper at Pitlochry in the early morning; the up-flung blind to the panorama of loveliness of loch and crag and sun-splashed streams; the cup of tea and the first cigarette lying there in regal luxury". Makes you yearn for the days of rail travel. Also a great piece of history of both the evolution of the game and courses in the British Isles. Birkdale and Troon had not yet received their Royal designations and are listed as such in the book. The links at Hoylake are described as The Royal Lancashire Golf Club as opposed to Royal Liverpool. We specialize in golf books and this is one of our favorites.
